“Another day took us up to the hills, to Bussana Vecchia, an old village originally destroyed by an earthquake in 1887. The town itself is a contrast between pretty, hip, and haunting, with art galleries next door to fallen brick walls. Large portions lie as they did for decades. The main church looks like a bombed-out shell, with its roof open to the sky. Paintings are still fresh on its walls.”
