It may not command the location of the Rialto Bridge, but the Bridge of Sighs is arguably the greater achievement and perhaps Venice’s most beautiful bridge…

Steve Marriott crossed “over Bridge of Sighs, to rest [his] eyes in shades of green,” but he was speaking psychedelically. The bridge leads not to Itchycoo Park but between “a palace and a prison on each hand,” as Lord Byron more prosaically described it; and the ‘sighs’ are those of the prisoners taken over it. There are other Bridges of Sighs, including one in Oxford (hence Marriott’s “dreaming spires”), but none in his actual Itchycoo Park, which is in Ilford.
